As a wise man once said, age ain’t nothing but a number—and there’s no better proof than the life of senior style icon Iris Apfel. A legend in her own lifetime, the remarkable 91-year-old caught up with fashion blogger Ari Seth Cohen in this Avant/Garde Diaries exclusive.

Apfel is dismissive of society’s current obsession with youth over experience, focusing instead on the business of knowing your own style—and in her case designing your own style, too. With a line of eyewear for Eyebobs, an accessory line for the Home Shopping Network, an Apfel-branded MAC range (as well as inspiring a Jimmy Choo sandal) Ms Apfel is finally getting the recognition she deserves after a lifelong love affair with eye-catching vogue. ‘I like to be maximal,’ she says, and it shows.
