“Real fashion” may sound like something incomprehensible in our culturally fractious time, but perennially black-clad Diane Pernet certainly has got it. A fixture of Paris fashion shows, Pernet observes the sway of modern styles not only on the catwalk, but also on the screen. Having founded the film festival, “A Shaded View on Fashion Film,” Pernet has injected the medium of film into a direct dialogue with designers, popularizing a completely new way to showcase collections and styles. As she says, “We have seen catwalks for years. It’s time to be more creative.” Bruno Pieters, a former Hugo Boss designer, shares her vision, and the two discuss the evolving roles of fashion in their Avant/Garde Diaries entry.
