Fort van Sjakoo
The alternative bookstore

Sjakoo is the Amsterdam equivalent of Robin Hood: it’s said that he stole from the rich, gave to the poor and that a labyrinthine web of tunnels spread underneath Amsterdam led to his underground hide-out.

This legend fits the alternative bookstore situated just behind the Waterloo square, where it has attracted an international crowd of bibliophiles since 1977. The tightly packed shop is run by a group of volunteers who are eager to help you find all the radical, libertarian and countercultural literature, pamphlets and magazines you could possibly need.

So whether you’re looking for the latest issue of Adbusters, the official biography of Ulrike Meinhof or a Guy Debord in the original French, you’re likely to find it here. And if it can’t be found immediately, the staff is more than happy to order it for you.
