It may be a bit clichéd to get stoned in Amsterdam, but it is still a unique experience, and one not to be missed if you’re partial to the hippie lettuce. There is a full spectrum of choice when it comes to atmosphere and the product itself. Some coffeeshops are big and colorful, while others are small and dark. Some cater mostly to locals, others to tourists. Some do better weed, others better hash.
Of course, getting high isn’t just about smoking dope, it’s also about getting the munchies! Everyone who comes here has a story about having eaten the absolute bestest falafel, waffle, FEBO meat-product – EVER! This could of course mean that Amsterdam serves fabulous food, or it could just be the green haze talking… Either way, there are plenty of places around town, from hot dog stands to noodle bars to sit down restaurants in which to satisfy your chronic cravings.
While Amsterdam is famous for its coffeeshops, marijuana is not actually legal here. Instead, there is a policy of non-enforcement, or “gedoogbeleid” (turning a blind eye, essentially), which is how coffeeshops are able to sell it. However, it’s seriously frowned upon (especially by the police) if you go around town flaunting the fact that you’re smoking dope and making an arse of yourself—so don’t.

And now for the munchies: this popular restaurant serves a variety of voluminous Asian dishes. A perfect place to rest your woozy head and fill your stomach before, during or after a tour of the coffeeshops.
Of particular interest to those who have been toking the ganja is the halve rookworst (smoked sausage) sold at this hallowed Dutch chain. Mustard included!
A perfect place for munchie sufferers, this fast food joint offers a variety of burgers and fried stuffs. No worries if the mary j’s got you all tongue-tied, you can simply slot some change in and pull out your food from one of the little window dispensers, no dialogue needed.
If all you can think about is sinking your teeth into a juicy burger, then this is the place to go.
If you’re in the mood for mouth-watering Thai dishes, don’t look any further. You can sit down at the restaurant, or get take-away from the snack bar across the road.
