Dutch fast food might not be on the top of your wish list, especially considering that most of it is deep fried in rancid fat and served in grease-stained, brightly lit shacks that look about as inviting as a case of scurvy.
While eating fries the Dutch way (yes, smothered in mayonnaise) or the occasional kroket can’t be considered healthy per se, they can be very tasty, and at Natuurlijk Smullen, they’re even environmentally friendly! This little family-run snack joint in the west of Amsterdam serves organic meat and ecologically durable products for prices that are just slightly higher than your average grease pit’s.
For a real Dutch treat, try a patatje oorlog (“fries a la war”): the fries are light brown and crunchy on the outside, yet soft and fluffy on the inside, with homemade, slightly tangy mayonnaise and spicy warm peanut sauce. This combination is sometimes served with shredded onions, but you can leave those out if you want to. The vegetarian kroket, frikandel and hamburger also come highly recommended. It might not be haute cuisine, but try Dutch fast food done right here before judging the Dutch on their nefarious FEBO fare.
