Every year, a crack team of gourmands puts its collective arteries on the line so they can inform the general public where it can shovel the best portion of fries down its maw. This Flemish snack bar (named after the famous small statue of a urinating little boy in Brussels) often ends in the top spot of that grease-marked list.

Manneken Pis’s ranks so high because it uses freshly sliced potatoes instead of frozen ones, fries them in fresh fat, and liberally salts the fries before copiously slathering them with one of the twenty-odd sauces and condiments on offer.

It’s one of the few places on the ugly, pigeon-infested strip called the Damrak, leading from the Central Station into the city. On a Friday or Saturday night or early morning, don’t be surprised to see throngs of people waiting in line so they can sate their drunken or stoned munchies with a portion of fresh fries. If you have to succumb to your fast food urges, you could stand to do a whole lot worse.
