Hidden from the loud crowds of the bustling Rembrandtplein, the Café Schiller harbors the sort of decadence and substance that belies its location. Its surreptitiously skinny façade does not reveal the cafe’s immense depth, and allows for separate restaurant and café sections with a bar in the middle.
The quiet comfort of the secluded seating makes the busy outside fade into oblivion, especially after food has been served. Though the wine selection is expansive, Schiller has aims to make even the more expensive wines accessible to everybody, so all bottle are priced the same: 15 Euro. The evening’s frivolities do not have to end there, since you are also allowed to BYOB—and pay the same (cork) fee for it!
Add to this the ever so organic Art Deco interiors and before you know it, all sorts of opinionated creative souls flock in to have red port and heavy discussions on art and politics, which has been the case since Schiller’s heyday in the early 20th century as a hotel, restaurant and café.
