The most important museum for modern art in Amsterdam has been under renovation since 2004 and according to the most optimistic accounts, the newfangled edition should be finished any time soon. After the temporary location where it resided near Central Station has been closed down, the museum was left in a limbo of sorts. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, other people are hard at work on internal arrangements for the new museum, its shop and restaurant, 90,000 art works are being moved to a huge new depot, and the collection itself is being restored.

But instead of drifting around aimlessly, this has motivated the Stedelijk to get down and dirty and most importantly in your face. That’s right, the Stedelijk is eager to let everyone know they’re still alive and well. Which means that whenever you spot something that looks like a glorified cargo container, it could just be a mobile gallery, video installation, performance art stage or other cunning pop-up venue under the banner of the Stedelijk.
