As Amsterdam’s city theater, the Stadsschouwburg stages quality theater, music and dance performances throughout the year. The theater also plays host to several festivals, including the contemporary dance festival Julidans in July and the Holland Festival, a massive cultural event which usually takes place at the end of May.
The ornate, impressive theater, located on the Leidseplein, opened in 1894. It was built after its predecessor burned down in 1892, and served as the home of the national ballet and opera companies until they moved over to the Muziektheater in the late 1980s.
However, actors and dancers aren’t the only ones using the theater. When the local football team, Ajax, wins an important match, the team stands on the Stadsschouwburg’s balcony and waves to adoring fans in the square below.
