Hansje van Halem is a graphic designer with a big antique cabinet in her living room and former studio. Every two months she invites a new artist to decorate the cabinet and fill it with the objects of their desires, like the historical cabinets of curiosities in Renaissance Europe.
The name comes from the tiny label on the cabinet, which says “Cabinet 8” in German. But whatever fate befell the 7 predecessors, one thing’s for sure: They won’t have the bewildering appeal of the hybrid arrangements found inside of the magic 8. Recently, for example, Pinar & Viola’s eccentric collection was a montage of carefully manipulated pictures, all portraying veiled divas.
Schrank8 is a quirky testament to the recycling ingenuity of the modern day art crowd. Merging the boundaries of public and private, old and new, the cabinet is always brimful of marvels. So be sure to check out the Schrank8 blog for current exhibitions.
