This former film academy was squatted in 1999 to prevent the local government from tearing it down and building bike paths instead. It wasn’t hard to come up with a better plan though, and OT301 was reinvented as a cultural venue. After the requisite legal squabbles, the society Eerste Hulp bij Kunst (EHBK, “first aid in case of art”) was able to buy the property, thereby preventing this unique place from disappearing and instead transforming it into a ‘multi-media alternative cultural center’.
That’s quite a mouthful, but what can you really expect here? Well, it is definitely ‘multi’, in the sense of the diversity of activities that take place. There’s a gallery with frequently changing shows, a vegan restaurant, a cult cinema, a ping pong-bar on Tuesdays, and workshops in all sorts of skills like break dance or trapeze.
You’d almost forget OT301 is also an excellent underground club with nights ranging from old school acid to dubstep and nu disco. Don’t expect anything fancy, you’ll still easily notice the squatting past of the place. However, with names like Jason Forrest and Aardvarck, this place is definitely an option for an exciting, not-your-average night out.
