Though housed in a stately canal house, Foam is Amsterdam’s answer to a contemporary photography museum. Inside, it’s everything you’d expect from a photography museum: bright, modern and sleekly designed. Although it’s relatively small, the museum has a lot of little nooks and crannies with hidden treasures. (The downside of this is that Foam’s not very accessible for disabled people. In that case, it is wise to call in advance.)

Foam explores photography from many different angles, with exhibitions ranging from world famous photographers like Richard Avedon to rising Dutch star Viviane Sassen but they also feature young talent. The small, intimate library on the 3rd floor, for instance, always hosts exhibitions by young, recently graduated photographers.

And in case you need to recover after a lengthy stint spent enjoying Foam’s inspiring selections, there’s another secret in the basement: the café. With a quiet reading table, free wi-fi and delicious, home-made sandwiches and pies it’s the perfect spot to regain your strengths.
