Filmtheater Kriterion
Film studies

Kriterion has a long and eventful history: it was started right after WWII by a former member of the Dutch resistance to ensure that students with little resources could work there in order to support themselves. More than 60 years later, the cinema still thrives, with every aspect of the business still firmly in student hands.

While the cinema itself shows a worthwhile mix of arthouse films, classics and the occasional kiddie flick, the Kriterion especially shines when they play host to a film festival or roll out the red carpet for a special premiere party. The student-friendly prices for both beverages and a limited, but tasty selection of sandwiches make a visit fairly easy on your wallet, and the tickets are not too expensive either, especially if you qualify for a student discount.

There’s a special sneak preview every Tuesday night and a midnight movie on Fridays as well. Keep an eye out for parties during the weekend: the comparatively cheap booze, lack of cover charges and the sheer amount of good-looking, party-lovin’ students always make for a festive mood.
